Most people walk past the embassies on 22nd Street without a second look. On Thursday night, one of them is setting the table for you.
An evening at the Embassy of Tanzania
On Thursday, October 15, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm, Things To Do DC is hosting an evening inside the Embassy of Tanzania at 1232 22nd St NW. A Tanzanian chef is cooking a buffet of home-style dishes and desserts, there’s a bar pouring Tanzanian beer and wine, and local performers are bringing music and fashion from home. Ambassador Elsie Sia Kanza is scheduled to say a few words, and embassy staff will be around to talk you through the traditional carvings and paintings on display.
We like these nights because you get something a museum can’t give you: the people who actually live the culture, in their own building, happy to answer whatever you ask. Go with an empty stomach. Embassy buffets are not shy.
Tickets are $64. The organizer says space is extremely limited and the price climbs closer to the date, so if you’re in, book it now: tickets and details. One thing to plan for: there’s a dress code. Business casual, no jeans, tees or sneakers. Throw a collared shirt or a nice dress in your bag.
Getting there from the hostel: the embassy is in the West End, about a mile and a half from us. A rideshare is quick, or if it’s a nice evening, walk it down through Dupont Circle. Give yourself around 35 minutes on foot.
